United Way of Westmoreland County

Dear Reader,

Enclosed is an article about how investments in United Way are making a difference in the lives of individuals in our area. Thank you for your continued interest in United Way of Westmoreland County's news service.

We are proud to share with you this week an article about United Way's commitment to providing resources for those who need the most support in our area.

Live Help - 24 Hours a Day With One Phone Call

Getting connected to get answers is the goal of 2-1-1.  Terri, a working, single mother with two small children called Westmoreland County's Information and Referral Helpline and found the answers she needed swiftly and with just one call.

Terri was sick; resulting in missed work, no paycheck, and bills still piling up.  She fell behind on her electric and heating bills, forcing her children to stay with relatives in order to fend off the cold.  Through one phone call, Terri was linked to four programs, thanks to the support of several organizations: Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Greensburg, United Way of Westmoreland County, Westmoreland County Commissioners and Westmoreland Human Opportunities Inc.

If you need help, just call 800.222.8848 any hour, any day and you will connect to a live person that can connect you to hundreds of agencies in our area, including our partner agencies.

Through this assistance, Terri was able to keep her utilities and obtain lower cost heat assistance.  She also was connected to affordable medical insurance from the Highmark Caring Foundation.

For most of the country, 2-1-1's Information and Referral gives the critical link to information and resources when people need it most.  As of November 14th, the business plan for Pennsylvania's regional 2-1-1 service has been finalized.  United Way of Westmoreland County is the designated lead convener for Pennsylvania's Region Two - Southwest Pennsylvania, ensuring that help is just one phone call away, 24 hours a day.  As Terri put it, "Before I called, I felt like I was all alone in this and that no one cared. It's nice to know that you are here."

Our efforts to secure 2-1-1 helps support an important area of need -  Building Strong Neighborhoods and Communities.  With your help we can ensure everyone has access to the resources that provide a safety net for those in need.

Your investment in United Way of Westmoreland County is what matters. Thank you!

Thank you, once again, for your participation!
